Passover Seder (For Believers in Christ)
In Hebrew, the Passover meal is called Pesach Seder. "Pesach" means Passover, and "Seder" means order, which means the Passover meal follows a special ritual, process, and sequence. The Passover meal begins before sunset on the 14th day of the first month (Nisan) in the Jewish calendar.

Passover Seder: Four Cups of Grape Juice
The Passover Seder ceremony revolves around four cups of grape juice (one cup, filled four times). Each cup has a name, taken from Exodus 6:6-7.
“Therefore say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians.’” — Exodus 6:6-7
Each cup corresponds to a promise God gave Israel. The four cups are called:
-
The Cup of Santification:
The Cup of Sanctification. (God chose Israel and set them apart. God also chooses us and sets us apart.) -
The Cup of Deliverance:
The Cup of Deliverance. (God with great power punished Egypt and delivered Israel from bondage. God also delivers us from the bondage of sin.) -
The Cup of Redepmtion:
The Cup of Redemption. (God redeemed Israel from the house of slavery in Egypt through the blood of the lamb. God also redeems us from the slavery of sin by Christ’s blood.) -
The Cup of Acceptance:
The Cup of Acceptance (Praise). (God accepted Israel as His people. God also accepts us as His people.)
Preparation Ceremony: Lighting Candles
The mother (female host) lights the candles and prays:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who sanctifies us with His commandments and commands us to kindle the lights of the festival.
Below is the order of the Passover Seder, led by the father.
一,Kiddush 成圣
1. Kiddush – Sanctification
The First Cup: The Cup of Sanctification
The Seder begins with the blessing over the first cup, setting the Passover night apart as holy. The cup is filled to the brim, meaning joy. We rejoice at Passover, celebrating God's goodness to us.
The father says:
Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haOlam, boray pri hagahfen.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Then everyone drinks the grape juice together.
二,Urchatz 洁净
2. Urchatz – Washing
Washing hands (In John 13:1-11, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet before Passover, setting them apart as holy.)
The father pours water for the family to wash and dry their hands, symbolizing cleansing oneself to enter Passover.
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in His holy place? The one who has clean hands and a pure heart… —Psalm 24:3-4
3. Karpas – Green Vegetable
Dip green vegetable in salt water (Exodus 12:21-22)
Green vegetables represent hyssop. At Passover, the Israelites used hyssop to apply the lamb's blood to their doorframes. That night, God passed over the Israelites' homes and struck down Egypt's firstborn. Salt water represents the tears the Israelites shed in Egypt, and the Red Sea. We remember those who are not yet redeemed, still weeping in bondage.
Everyone dips the vegetable in salt water; the father says:
Baruch Atah Adonai Eloheinu Melech haOlam, bohray pri haadamah.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the produce of the earth.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the produce of the earth.
Then everyone eats the vegetable together.
4. Yachatz – Breaking the Matzah
Passover is also called the Feast of Unleavened Bread; unleavened bread is eaten for seven days. For the Seder, three pieces of matzah are prepared and wrapped in cloth or paper. Why three? There are many explanations: some say they represent Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; others say priest, Levite, and Israelite; others say Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
The father takes the middle matzah, breaks it into two, returns one half, and wraps the other half in a white napkin to be hidden as the Afikoman. The Afikoman symbolizes Jesus Christ, as will be explained later. Before the Seder ends, the children must find the hidden matzah.
5. Maggid – Telling the Passover Story
(Exodus 12:1-15) This passage is read at every Passover Seder, so every generation remembers how God delivered Israel from the house of slavery in Egypt.
6. Ma-Nishtanah – The Four Questions
The children ask the father four questions: Why is this night different from all other nights?
-
On all other nights we eat leavened bread, why tonight only unleavened bread? -
On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables, why tonight only bitter herbs? -
On all other nights we do not dip vegetables in water even once, why tonight do we dip them in salt water? -
On all other nights we eat sitting or reclining, why tonight do we all recline?
The father answers: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, but God brought us out with a mighty hand and outstretched arm. If God had not brought our ancestors out of Egypt, we, our children, and our descendants would still be slaves to Pharaoh. Even if we are old, wise, and have studied Torah, we must still tell the story of the Exodus. (Exodus 13:14-16)
七,The Ten Plagues(十灾)
7. The Ten Plagues
Pour the second cup of grape juice. God teaches us not to rejoice over the punishment of our enemies, so we do not fill the second cup to the brim.
The father recites the ten plagues: blood, frogs, lice, flies, pestilence, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and the death of the firstborn. For each plague, everyone dips their little finger in the cup and puts a drop on their plate, for a total of 10 times.
Sing the Passover song "Dayenu," meaning "It would have been enough." The Israelites sing this song with gratitude and reverence, remembering God's mighty deliverance from Egypt.
Ilu hotzi, hotzianu, hotzianu miMitzrayim, hotzianu miMitzrayim, dayenu!
Dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dayenu, dayenu!
Ilu natan natan lanu, natan lanu et haTorah, natan lanu et haTorah, dayenu!
Dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dayenu, dayenu!
Ilu natan natan lanu, natan lanu et Yeshua, natan lanu et Yeshua, dayenu!
Dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dai-dai-yenu, dayenu, dayenu!
八,Makkot 释放
8. Makkot – Deliverance
The Second Cup: The Cup of Deliverance (Judgment)
Everyone raises the cup and says: We praise God for His great redemption, which came at a great price—the death of Egypt's firstborn; likewise, through the death of God's Son, we are delivered from sin.
"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." —John 3:16
Everyone may sing hymns to praise God, remembering the redemption of Jesus Christ.
Jesus took the cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." —Luke 22:17-18
The father says:
Baruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei nu Me-lech ha-Olam, boh-ray pri ha-gahfen.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Then everyone drinks the second cup of grape juice together.
9. Zeroah – The Passover Lamb
The shank bone on the plate represents the Temple sacrifice. We remember the first Passover lamb, which was slain for Israel, and its blood applied to their doorframes.
We lift up the shank bone, remembering that the Passover lamb died in place of the firstborn of Israel.
We also remember that Jesus Christ died for our sins; He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
We explain to the children what redemption means: our sins require the shedding of blood for forgiveness (Leviticus 17:11; Hebrews 9:22).
We can read Isaiah 52:13–53:12, remembering the death of Jesus Christ.
10. Rachtzah – Washing Hands Before the Meal
A second washing of hands before the meal, symbolizing our need for cleansing. Jesus Christ went further by washing the disciples' feet, showing us His example of humble service (John 13:2–17).
The father says:
Ba-ruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, ash-er kid-sha-nu b’mits-vo-tav v’tsi-va-nu al ne-tee-lat ya-dayim.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to wash our hands.
Motzi Matzot
Motzi Matzot – Eating the Matzah
When eating matzah, we remember that Jesus gave His body for us, setting us free from the bondage of sin.
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." —Luke 22:19
The father lifts up the matzah and says:
Ba-ruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, Ha-mo-tzi le-chem min hah-ah-retz.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
Everyone breaks a piece of matzah and says:
Ba-ruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, ash-er kid-sha-nu b’mits-vo-tav v’tsi-va-nu al a-chi-lat ma-tzah.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to eat matzah.
Everyone eats matzah together.
Maror
Maror – Eating the Bitter Root
The bitter root represents the suffering of the Israelites in Egypt and the suffering of people in sin. Each person takes a piece of bitter root with matzah and says:
Ba-ruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, ash-er kid-sha-nu b’mits-vo-tav v’tsi-va-nu al a-chi-lat mah-ror.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to eat the bitter herb.
Everyone eats the bitter root together.
Korech
Korech – Eating the Charoset
Charoset represents the mortar the Israelites used in Egypt. Traditionally, two pieces of matzah sandwich bitter herbs and charoset, tasting both bitterness and sweetness together. Everyone eats.
Beitzah
Beitzah – Eating the Egg
The egg represents sacrifices offered in the Temple, but since there is no Temple, sacrifices cannot be made. We dip the egg in salt water and eat it.
11. Shulchan Orech – Eating the Meal
After the meal, a prayer of thanks (Birchat haMazon) is said. This prayer comes from Deuteronomy 8:10: "When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land He has given you."
The Jewish after-meal prayer has several parts: thanking God for food, for the Promised Land, for Jerusalem, and for His goodness.
Blessing: "Let the name of the LORD be praised, both now and forevermore!" (Psalm 113:2)
Blessing: Praise God for giving us food to be satisfied and His goodness for our survival.
Blessing for food:
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe. In Your goodness, grace, mercy, and love, You feed the world. Your lovingkindness endures forever. You give food to all living things. Because of Your unending goodness, we never lack food; for Your name’s sake, we will not lack food in the future. You are the God who provides for all creation. Blessed are You, Lord, who feeds all.
12. Tzafun and Afikoman – Finding the Matzah
After the meal, the children look for the hidden matzah (Afikoman); whoever finds it gets a prize. The father breaks the matzah and distributes it to everyone.
Meaning: We believe the Afikoman matzah symbolizes Jesus Christ. The breaking of the matzah symbolizes Jesus' death, its being hidden represents His burial, and its being found symbolizes His resurrection. The matzah (unleavened bread) represents Jesus as the sinless (leaven represents sin) sacrifice who redeems us from sin and death.
As we take a piece of the Afikoman, let us remember the grace of the Lord Jesus:
"But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed." —Isaiah 53:5
Let us all meditate on Jesus’ self-offering as a sacrifice. The father says a blessing:
Ba-ruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-Olam, Ha-mo-tzi le-chem min ha-ah-retz.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.
Everyone eats the matzah together.
13. HaGeulah – Redemption
The Third Cup: The Cup of Redemption.
The third cup commemorates God's mighty arm and judgment in redeeming Israel from Egypt, and also the lamb's blood that accomplished this redemption.
Jesus raised the third cup, speaking of a redemption greater than the Exodus:
"In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.'" —Luke 22:20
God redeems people from sin through the blood of Jesus Christ. The new covenant Jesus spoke of is what the prophet Jeremiah foretold:
"'The days are coming,' declares the LORD, 'when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors... I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people... For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.'" —Jeremiah 31:31-34
The father says:
Baruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, boh-ray pri ha-gah-fen.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Everyone drinks the third cup together.
14. Eliyahu – Elijah
The book of Malachi prophesies that Elijah will come to announce the Messiah's arrival.
"See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents..." —Malachi 4:5-6
Traditionally, Jews prepare a seat and a cup for Elijah. The father asks a child to open the door to see if Elijah has come. The New Testament tells us that John the Baptist was the Elijah foretold in Malachi, coming in the spirit and power of Elijah to prepare the way for the Lord Jesus.
15. Hallel – Praise
The Fourth Cup: The Cup of Praise.
The Israelites rejoice in freedom because of God's redemption; we, too, rejoice in freedom because of Jesus Christ's salvation.
This cup of praise also foreshadows the future of Israel, the Messianic Kingdom, and the coming eternal kingdom (the new heaven, new earth, and New Jerusalem).
The father says:
Baruch Atah Adonai Elo-hei-nu Me-lech ha-Olam, boh-ray pri ha-gah-fen.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the vine.
Everyone drinks the fourth cup together.
16. Hallel Psalms – Singing Psalms of Praise
We read Psalms of praise, Psalms 113–118. After the Last Supper, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives, singing Psalms 113–118.
"When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives." —Matthew 26:30
17. Next Year in Jerusalem
At the end of the Passover Seder, Jews proclaim to each other:
L’Shana HaBa’ah B’Yerushalayim!
L’Shana HaBa’ah B’Yerushalayim! Next year in Jerusalem!
We believe Jesus will return a second time and reign in Jerusalem, establishing the Messianic Kingdom.
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this." —Isaiah 9:6-7
